My monthly burn rate as a software engineer at Meta in New York City is $6,500 and I genuinely cannot tell if this is normal. So I broke down exactly where everything went. Let's talk about it. Here is where the $6,500 went and some of it actually surprised me. Starting with my biggest fixed cost, which is just living in New York at this point. My rent was $3,350 this month, which is $100 more than it usually is, because I had to add some security deposit for renewing my lease. But honestly, that's what happens when you have a goated one bedroom in Manhattan. Next for the expected spending, I spent $661.55 on dining, $292.59 on groceries, $45.02 on healthcare. I spent $536.57 on personal shopping, which is usually way lower, but I had to restock my perfumes because I need to smell good. I did get a luxury gym membership at TMPL, it was $187.06 for the pro-rated amount for the month. On to subscriptions, I spent $9.49 on the Spotify plan I split with my best friend Sammy, and I spent $22.98 on Apple Care One. I spent $242.92 on travel, so flights and Ubers. This is all fine and dandy, right? But no, this is where I actually started to see the total creeping up for the month of April because it was my birthday month, a lot of my friends visited me and it ended up with me Venmoing people $403.96 for some reason. And then in my miscellaneous, I spent $728.20. Within this miscellaneous category, I spent $161.08 on a haircut. I know, stop, don't judge. $58 on a massage, $40.83 on a freaking networking event. And the biggest thing was renting out a rooftop bar for my birthday, which was actually only $344.64. But with the help of my friends, trying to gap the minimum by buying drinks. So in total, my monthly burn rate was $6,520.35 for the month of April. This is bad, this is good, this is out of touch? Yeah, probably.
