Here's how you can send a cold email that will actually get responses coming from someone who's had internships, experiences, and job experiences that have helped me get into schools like Harvard, Stanford, and UPenn just by sending a cold email. My first tip is to please, please, please personalize the emails. If you're emailing a researcher and you read their past work, mention something about that in the email. Even if you're emailing 2 million people at the same time, this will show the other person that you've actually taken the time out of your day to read their work and they'll be more likely to respond. My second tip is that if they don't respond to your first cold email, email again. We all know how emails can get lost in the spam and you taking the extra step to follow up really shows that you care and will make them more likely to respond. My last advice is to tell the person that you're cold emailing that even if there are no current positions that you would still love to meet with them and learn about their work. This gives them an opportunity to share their work with you without having the pressure of giving you a position. This really shows initiative and that face-to-face recognition will give them an opportunity to refer you to someone else who might have an open position or to keep you in mind for future open positions.
