Hook

How do you answer a rude or insulting customer? I've been asked this many, many times and I'll tell you exactly how. Prospect or customer, it makes no difference. The answer starts before you say a single word. You go quiet for a second longer than feels comfortable and you just wait. A rude person is looking for a fight. They've already got their next jab loaded. When you don't swing back, the whole thing loses its fuel. Silence pulls the air right out of it. That pause also buys you the one thing anger destroys: a clear head. React. The second you react fast, you react badly. When you do speak, go low and slow. Drop your voice instead of raising it. Something simple like, I hear you, let's sort this out. And remember what's really happening. They're rarely angry at you. You're just the face in front of them when something else boiled over. And you give them leverage. So you don't meet their temperature, you set it. They walked in hot and your whole job is to bring the room down to where a conversation can happen. Quiet first, calm second. Away forward third time. Every time the steadiest person in the exchange is the one holding the control.
