So many parents can’t fathom getting children to listen without yelling, force, or intimidation, but I promise it is possible and it’s going to give you even better long-term results! My kids are incredibly disciplined, polite, and responsible—and that all starts as soon as they can walk. Children (especially toddlers) have a strong drive for autonomy, and it’s for a reason! They’re supposed to want to be independent so they can learn how to do things for themselves. Instead of suppressing that drive, use it to your advantage! Because the more you can get chidlren to agree to doing things themselves, the more you build intrinsic motivation. The more you force children to comply, the more they rely on extrinsic motivation which won’t serve them well in life. You’ll notice I didn’t promise my toddler an extra prizes# like cookies or a toy for cleaning, I just used the natural reinforcer of getting more milk once she cleaned the spilled milk up. And I also do something fun like giving tickles or swings after my kids listen! Knowing how your child’s brain functions helps so much in getting them to cooperate & it also helps you set high expectations, because children are so much more capable than we give them credit for. PS: I cut out all of the silences so in reality I gave her a lot more processing time after each of my statements.
