You’ve tried everything & your child still can’t fall asleep without you Even when you wait over an hour for them to be in a deep sleep and sneak away, they’re up 30 minutes later looking for you to lie with them again, and the cycle repeats all night 🔁 If you try to leave the room, they sob & sob, and you can’t stand the idea of letting them cry it out Here’s what happened: you’ve trained them to think your presence is required for them to fall asleep & that only YOU can make them feel safe So now they need to learn that they are safe in their own bed & don’t need your help to fall asleep. Introduce NEW comfort items: a story player, books, a reading light, sound machine, cozy blanket, water bottle, and favorite stuffy. Walk them through their NEW routine using a doll, and have your child tuck them into bed in another room and say “Bye bye! Good night!” Then sit next to them, but don’t lie with them. Stay strong because your child needs to learn you mean what you say and that your boundaries are stable (this will build trust & security). Hug them and calm them when they cry, but after they’re calm, go right back to your spot on the floor each time. Encourage them to rely on their new comfort items whenever they become distressed. Be empathetic, but boring. Stay next to them until they fall asleep. If they wake in the MOTN, follow the same process & sit next to them on the floor. A few nights later, move to the middle of their room and repeat the process in the new spot. A few nights after that, sit outside of their door with the door open and repeat the process in the hallway. A few nights later, they’ll be ready for independence! Tell them “Bye Bye! Good night!,” leave the room, and close the door behind you. If they cry, go in their room & pause their story until they lie down calmly & repeat 🔁 But most of the time they’re totally content at that point!
