In my experience, when the best employees stop pushing back, they've already fucking quit. Leadership just has not been told yet. You know, here's something that managers get completely backwards all the time. When the best person pushes that them being difficult, that's them just think about it. Nobody fights for something they've given up on, right? When somebody challenges, tells you a better that takes actual fucking energy. That takes guts. They're doing it because they still believe the place is worth fixing. They still think management will actually listen. So the day that they stop, that's not them finally getting on board, that's not peace. That's the sound of somebody giving up on you. But the trap so many leaders fall into, they wanted quiet. They were tired of the pushback. Tired of the hard questions. So when their best employee finally goes silent, they think, they think finally they're a team player now. Look, management didn't win shit. They just lost the one who cared enough to tell them the truth. The arguing was never the problem. The arguing was the last sign that person still gave a damn. And once that's gone, it doesn't come back with a raise. It doesn't come back with a pizza party. Because by the time somebody stops speaking up, they've all the calculations, they've out in their head. Waiting on their body to have reason to follow. So if you're gone quiet at work, if you used to fight for the good idea, just nod, let that shit slide. You didn't get lazy, you got tired of talking to a damn wall. And that's not a you problem, that's a them losing you. Losing you one ignored comment at a time. Your best people don't slam the door on the way out. They stop knocking. And by the time a boss finally notices how quiet it got, that person's already got one foot out the door. Management just hasn't been told yet.
