Minecraft modding might go away before you leave. Before you leave, I don't mean that it's going to go away in a sense that people will not make mods for Minecraft, but if you're completely unaware how modding works behind the scenes, let me just explain a little bit to you so you can kinda get what I mean. Currently in Minecraft modding, there's a few major mod loaders that people make mods for, right? This is Fabric, NeoForge, and I believe there's a third one, but it's not really too commonly used. And then there's a third thing that's kind of weird, and these are called data packs. And data packs are pretty vanilla Minecraft native, right? And they're extremely powerful. But right now data packs are limited. They are objectively limited in certain ways to where if you wanted to add certain features, you would have to go and use a Minecraft mod loader. But with every single update, it seems like Mojang improves the way that Minecraft is driven by data. Makes it easier to mod with, ironically, but also makes data packs more capable of changing more things. And what I think that the endgame for Mojang is, well, it may not be explicitly to get rid of modding, but in a way, by creating more tools for players and making data packs more capable of changing the game, I believe data packs may take over as the primary way of modding Minecraft, effectively kind of changing Minecraft modding into a different thing altogether. Now, I'm not entirely sure if this will hold up completely. I'm sure eventually data packs will be able to do certain things and a ton of mods will be created just into data packs. But there are certain mods like Create and Create Aeronautics where they change the game in such a significant way that I do think they will probably stay mods forever. And thankfully, due to a ton of good people's hard work behind the scenes, it's easier than ever to get into modding when it comes to Fabric and NeoForge. Even if you just wanna make one mod for one mod loader, there's a pretty good connector now that kinda makes them compatible between each other. But I do think we are advancing towards a future where Minecraft modding will be primarily data pack first and modding only if absolutely necessary.
