20 things I'd tell you as a former RA in college In college and here are 20 things I would tell you right now if I was your RA. Bring a fan into the dorm. It is hot. And make it so that it can fit into your window. You can eat at the dining hall alone. Literally nobody cares. Don't starve yourself just because you are too insecure to go and sit by yourself. Coffee is not breakfast. And if you spend money at those coffee places on campus, it gets pretty expensive if you do it everyday. Just because somebody is an upperclassman or older than you doesn't mean that they are more mature. So don't let the hierarchy make you like wigged out to talk to people. You need to eat breakfast in order for your brain to well for when you go to class and learn things. You don't have to sleep around and participate in hook up culture just because everybody Keep your values and morals straight if you don't want roommate issues. Quite literally just start communicating with your roommate. If your roommate crosses your boundaries, don't suffer through the entire year. Tell your R.A. That's literally what we're there for. Don't drink on an empty stomach. Don't walk the hallways with an open can. You're begging to get written up. Turn your music down during quiet hours. We hate knocking on your doors. If you open a door, don't Check your background. Make sure that there is nothing incriminating because if we see something we are legally mandated to report it. Be nice to your R.A. We are students too and they're just probably a job Call your parents and update them on your life. They miss you and they live vicariously through you. Clean your lint out of the laundry machine. And also don't take somebody else's laundry out unless you've given them at least a little bit of a grace period. Stop trying so hard to find a relationship or be in one. It will naturally happen. Open a credit card and start building credit. But do not spend more than you can afford. Stick to like groceries, gas, and other bills and needs. Don't spend money just because all of A lot of your friends will be proximity based. Don't feel offended if you guys start to drift. Stick up for your peers because if they're talking bad about them, then they will probably have no problem turning around and talking bad about you. Hold the door for people. Do not be selfish. Gosh, that was like the biggest pet peeve when people would leave the dining hall and not behind are you kidding me? That's all I got for today.
