FORM MODIFICATION IS

Tap the link in my bio to start the drawing drills course. One of my favorite exercises in the Drawing Drills is the Form Modification Drill. You start with the simplest shape possible: a box. Then you change it. Maybe you cut a small chunk out of one corner. On the next box, slice an entire side away to create a ramp. On another, punch a hole straight through the middle. Then challenge yourself with something more creative, like carving an archway underneath until it resembles a bridge. The important part isn’t the object you end up with. It’s forcing your brain to visualize three-dimensional changes before you draw them. Each new modification strengthens your intuitive understanding of perspective, form, and spatial reasoning. Over time, you’ll find yourself making these decisions naturally, which is exactly what allows you to draw convincingly from imagination instead of relying on reference for every little detail.
