Apple is killing the iPhone Upgrade Program. Starting Tuesday, "Apple Upgrade" powered by Klarna replaces it with a new leasing model for iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches. Lower monthly payments, but AppleCare is no longer included. Budget devices like iPhone 16 and Apple Watch SE are excluded entirely. You're paying less because you're getting less. Here's what you need to know before you sign up. With the new program, you're technically leasing to own the device, but you're not just limited to iPhones, you can also choose from a variety of devices including iPads, MacBooks, and even Apple Watches. But there are some exclusions and I'll get into that. After you pick your device, a soft credit check is run and you're leasing it month to month through Klarna. iPhones and Apple Watches are on a 24-month term and iPads and Macs are on a 36-month term. At any point during your term, you could pay it off early or upgrade to a newer device or just keep the device when your term ends. I also want to cover two things worth knowing that make a difference from the current iPhone upgrade program. The first one is that AppleCare is not included in your monthly payment. The current iPhone upgrade program does bundle AppleCare Plus into your monthly payment. However, with this program, if you want AppleCare protection, you have to pay for that in addition to your monthly payment. The second thing is that not every device qualifies. Lower cost iPhones like the iPhone 16 and 17, the entry level iPad, the MacBook Neo and the Apple Watch SE are excluded from the Apple Upgrade program. So unfortunately, these budget friendly options don't get the budget friendly payment plans. According to Apple, these monthly payments through Apple Upgrade are expected to be lower than current financing, but without AppleCare Plus baked in. You're just paying less because you're getting less. The program will go live on Tuesday, July 28th and that's when the iPhone upgrade program will end. So do you think you would use the Apple Upgrade program? Let me know what your thoughts are in the comments below.
