One very valuable piece of life experience I think first gen students have is that we've seen poverty. We've seen bottom of the barrel living. So we know what to be terrified of if school doesn't work out. It's like, oh, you don't want to study? Remember when you were nine years old after your mom died, going to visit your dad in the middle of nowhere, Oklahoma with no running water, no electricity, living like a bum. Is that where you want to end up? You know what I mean? Those of us breaking generational curses have seen how dark it can be if you do not succeed.
