She is buried. The house, the kids, the calendar, the eight hundred invisible things that keep this whole life from quietly falling apart, and you can see it on her, that thin, about-to-snap look she gets. So you do the noble thing. You glance up from your phone and deliver the line every man thinks is helpful. Just tell me what you need me to do and I will do it. Congratulations. You just failed her, and you feel like a hero for it. The tasks were never the thing crushing her. Anyone can load a dishwasher. The weight is everything wrapped around them. Being the one who notices every single one, holds them all in her head, and decides who does what and when. She is not a worker in this house. She is the manager, the air traffic controller for the entire operation, and that job does not clock out. Ever. So when you say tell me what to do, you just confirmed the whole thing is still hers. The noticing, the deciding, the remembering, all of it, still parked in her head. And now she gets to do it for you too. You put on a uniform and asked her to be your boss. A man who leads does not wait to be assigned. He sees the sink, the laundry, the thing that has needed doing for three days, and takes it, start to finish, decisions and all, so an entire category of it lifts out of her mind for good. So do not ask her what she needs. Tell her this, then go do it. "Kitchen's mine tonight. Bedtime's handled. Don't tell me how, don't check on it, I've got it. Go sit down." No questions. No where do you keep the. You take the whole thing, the doing and the deciding both, and carry it clean out of her head. She will not remember the clean kitchen. She will remember that for one night she got to stop being in charge of everything, because a man finally saw the weight and picked it up without being asked and without needing a map drawn for him. That is what she has been quietly begging for. You just had to stop offering to help and start taking the weight. The Dom's Playbook goes deep on it.
