"I don't know" might be the most honest thing she says all week. Alexithymia is a difficulty identifying and naming emotions, and it shows up at high rates in autistic and ADHD women. The feeling is there. It sits in her chest or her jaw. What is missing is the bridge between the sensation and the word. So when you ask how she is feeling, you are asking her to cross a bridge that does not exist. She searches, comes up empty, and says the only true thing available. Then she watches your face fall and hears you decide she is hiding something. Her parents asked her. Every partner has asked her. Each time she failed the question, she learned that she was bad at feelings, or cold, or broken somewhere deep. She has been answering a question written in a language her body does not speak. Ask about her body and she can tell you everything. She has been feeling all of it, all along, with nobody asking her the right way.
