Two hours into your friend's party, she is in the kitchen rinsing cups that are not hers. Nobody asked her to. You feel a small flash of pride watching her pitch in. Look again. Twenty minutes ago, the room went past what she could hold. She could not say so in front of your friends, in the middle of somebody else's night. So her body found the one behavior in that house nobody would ever question, and it has kept her at that sink ever since. That is the task alibi. Asking to leave requires a reason, and a reason invites a conversation, maybe even a push to stay twenty more minutes. A woman scrubbing a pan gets left alone. Being useful buys her the one thing she cannot ask for out loud: permission to stop being watched. Timing is the tell. Real helpfulness runs steady all night. The task alibi starts late, on something small, and it gets more intense the longer the room keeps asking things of her. Thanking her confirms the alibi is working and keeps her there. Setting the cup down for her and naming the exit yourself means she never has to invent one again. She has spent years doing dishes at other people's parties. Every one of those nights, she was waiting for someone to come get her. Lots in my bio. @officialkanecross #thetaskalibi #socialbattery #neurodivergent #domsub #relationshipadvice
