The most powerful buyer in technology has to start getting used to a word it has never heard before. No, because Apple is now being told pay what the data centers pay or wait in line. And you don't have to be a historian to realize that for 20 years, Apple has been the largest customer of semiconductors. They've ordered hundreds of millions of components, they paid suppliers up front, they've reserved factories for years in advance. And so when Apple walked in the room, everybody moved to the back of the line. And now Apple is the one standing at the back because the stakes have really changed. Apple is now competing with data centers. To buy the same advanced chips and memory. But the big difference here is that data centers can pay a lot more for it. Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Google, they're spending hundreds of billions of dollars building out AI infrastructure. And in case you didn't notice, they are not trying to protect the margin on a thousand dollar phone. They're in a life or death race right now. They have to secure computers before their nearest competitor does, so they can stay alive. The computer game starts to look like a winner takes all battle. So when a supplier says they want 20% more for chips, Meta, Amazon, and Google are gonna say, "Can you deliver them on Tuesday?" Whereas Apple can't just pay up because they are now protecting thinner and thinner margins on all their devices. So the longer the AI boom continues and there is still limited availability of chips on the market, there is to owning Apple.
