How I budget as a software engineer and pilot. How I pay my way through flight school. Flight training is honestly the most expensive thing ever, and I need to make sure that I can actually afford to finish. So I use Monarch to get a full picture of where my money is going. So shout out to them. I've been fortunate enough to build a six-figure career since graduating college, so I'm intentionally using that income to fund my flight training. I track all my regular fixed expenses, like groceries, rent, phone, student loans, and now flight training. Aviation also has flexible expenses that are not written in books, like check rates, fees. But crazy enough, my biggest financial challenge for now happens once I'm done. Once I'm done, I'm an instructor, I'll spend almost a 90% pay cut. Saving. So I'm not only saving up for my next flight lesson, I'm also saving up a transition fund to better absorb that drop in income. This is the system that I'm currently using and I'm sure it's not perfect. So if you've made a major career change or you're planning to, for what I can improve on, I've never been more sure about anything, making a necessary financial sacrifice that that dream.
