Save this before your next one on one! 10 practical tips on navigating a challenging manager in corporate: 1️⃣ Figure out what sets them off. Delays, surprises, lack of detail. Once you know their triggers, stop taking it personally and start using that information to stay one step ahead. 2️⃣ Over communicate. Short regular updates on what is done, what is in progress, where you are stuck. Do not make them chase you for information. 3️⃣ Before you start anything, clarify what success looks like to them. Speed or accuracy. Big picture or detail. Get it in writing if you can. 4️⃣ Never bring a problem without at least one solution. Here is the issue and here are two options. That one habit will change how they see you completely. 5️⃣ After every important conversation, send a quick recap. Just to confirm we agreed on X, Y, Z. It protects you and keeps everyone accountable. 6️⃣ Do not match their energy when they are difficult. Stay calm, neutral, factual. The one who stays composed always has more power in the room. 7️⃣ Set boundaries with structure not confrontation. I will deliver this by 2pm. I can take this on after I finish X. Firm but professional every time. 8️⃣ Build relationships across your team and with other leaders. Do not isolate yourself with one difficult manager as your only point of contact. 9️⃣ Ask yourself what this season is actually teaching you. Resilience, stakeholder management, communication under pressure. Log those wins. They belong on your CV. 🔟 Keep a quiet exit strategy running in the background. Updated CV, warm network, and a clear sense of your own line. Endurance is a strategy. Stagnation is not.
