When an employer keeps you around, but has no intention of promoting you, they usually do this:

Could this be you? 1️⃣ They give you the title only after you have already been doing the job for months. By then, the extra responsibility feels normal instead of being properly recognised. 2️⃣ They tell you that taking on more responsibility will make you a stronger candidate for promotion. But when promotion time comes, your extra work is treated as evidence that you are already useful where you are. 3️⃣ You are trusted to handle difficult clients, sensitive problems and high-pressure situations. But when a leadership opportunity opens up, they suddenly need someone with more experience. 4️⃣ Your manager keeps asking what your long-term goals are, but never connects those goals to an actual development plan, project or opportunity. 5️⃣ They use your lack of one specific skill as a reason to overlook everything else you already bring to the table. That one gap becomes a permanent excuse. 6️⃣ You are given feedback that sounds positive but gives you nothing actionable. “Keep doing what you are doing” is not a career development plan. 7️⃣ Your work is described as essential during busy periods, but your contribution is forgotten when budgets, promotions and leadership opportunities are discussed. 8️⃣ You are encouraged to be patient because the company wants to promote from within. At the same time, important roles continue going to people hired from outside. 9️⃣ You have become the person everyone depends on, but there is no plan for what happens when you move up. Your indispensability has become a reason to keep you in place. 🔟 You are told that a promotion is not possible right now, but you are still expected to perform at the next level. They want the output of a higher-paid employee without making the investment. If these examples feel familiar, do not only ask whether your manager appreciates you.
