The other day, I was volunteering at the shelter and walking my row of dogs. When I arrived, I noticed there was an empty kennel. At a shelter this overcrowded, seeing an empty kennel is actually something to be happy about. Unfortunately, that didn’t last long. Not long after, I saw an officer bring in a German Shepherd and place her in that kennel. I immediately went to look at her paperwork and realized she had just been surrendered. Her paperwork says she is 8 years old, good with dogs, good with kids, and housebroken. I took her outside to give her some time away from the noise and confusion of the shelter, but she couldn’t settle. She just kept pacing in circles. She wouldn’t take treats or play with the tennis ball. She looked completely lost and heartbroken. And then I learned why she was there… Her owner had her her whole life, since she was a puppy. And just about a week ago, he was deported. A family friend kept her for about a week and tried to find someone else to take her, but unfortunately, she couldn’t keep her either. So now this sweet senior is sitting in an overcrowded shelter, surrounded by strangers, trying to understand why her entire world suddenly disappeared. She doesn’t understand what “deported” means. She doesn’t understand why her person is gone. And the saddest part? She doesn’t know he is never coming back. Before I left, I gave her a blanket and a toy and made her a promise. I told her she has a whole village of people who are going to fight for her. I told her that together, we would find her a new home.
