How is it that when you receive a scam email, the English is always broken, the grammar is awful, and the scam is extremely obvious? Who would fall for this? Scammers do this intentionally. It's actually really smart and it's not for the reason that you think, because this researcher at Microsoft actually studied it and found out the answer. What he realized is that scammers typically go through two distinct steps to scam someone. The first is by mass emailing, which is extremely cheap, but the second step is actually getting on call and trying to process the payment, which is a lot more expensive because it involves human labor. So what scammers realize if the emails were actually convincing, you would pre-select for people who average intelligence. Someone whose average intelligence on call, they're gonna realize it's a scam and not buy. Which means now you're wasting expensive human labor was never gonna scam in the first place. But if you make the email really, really obvious that it's a scam, the only people who are gonna and go to the next step are people who are really stupid. And now you've have a stupid person on call who's much more likely to send you money in the scam, which means you're only spending your human labor on the pre-selected, most gullible individuals.
