did you know that Ethel Cain's third most streamed song is about cannibalism? am i no good? with my memory restricted to a polaroid in evidence it's the last song on her Preacher's Daughter album and she's singing about this guy Isaiah who she's in love with and she's basically saying like yeah you murdered me and you cannibalized me but I'm so in love with you that I'm not even mad about you killing me instead I'm asking you like "did I taste good?" "I don't wanna make you sick" like that's how in love she is with this person and then another metaphor she goes "you devoured me" "like smoked boned hide" or something "I never considered myself tough" and she's saying that like he turned her into beef jerky essentially she never thought like she was so soft like personality wise she was never a tough person so they're so many metaphors when she says "I tried to be good" "was I no good?" it's a metaphor like a double entendre because she's saying like in life she was trying to be a good girlfriend a good partner like why did you kill me like was I not being a good partner but then she's also saying like now in death is he's eating her like I'm trying to be good like do I taste good at least like do you enjoy the way that I taste like I want to be good for you there's two things I really love about Ethel Cain's music and one of them is her ability to really blend horror genre and religion and like they're they go together like they're opposites yet they go together so well one is meant to be comforting one is meant to be uncomfortable depending on who you ask and also every song of hers has this kind of build up to the end where like an instrument change or almost every single one of Ethel Cain's songs has like that similar drop like you see with happier than ever with Billie Eilish i'm not making you feel bad Ethel Cain is someone who's like fully a dream guest on my podcast i'm like so obsessed with Hayden and just everything she's created with these characters literally the day of outside land she posted on her Instagram that she's retiring the Ethel Cain character so I'm curious to see what she does next I could see Hayden acting in like a neon horror film as her next project but I would just love to have her on my podcast to just learn so much more about her but I feel like she doesn't do a lot of press so let me know what you guys think of Ethel Cain and what your favorite songs are of hers because mine is strangers the cannibalism song
