one of the songs on Olivia Rodrigo's new album is an absolute jump scare in the best way and I'm gonna tell you why I think it should have been the lead single of this era. This album you seem pretty sad for a girl so in love really does tell a full story starting with Olivia falling in love on Drop Dead and experiencing the anxiety that comes with that like moving too quickly and getting too attached. She's very clearly in the honeymoon phase on songs like Honey Bee which includes background vocals by Conan Gray and u + me = heart. That song gives very early 2000s romcom soundtrack song and I believe it's what she was referring to when she said that she has a full love song on this album that she hopes people use at their weddings. But there is a huge shift with this album that happens right after this song. The song My Way is when the breakup begins which gets messier and messier with every track and we see this petty side of Olivia which I love in fact she calls herself a petty bitch in this song. This leads me into the only critique I have right now which really is just about the rollout. I really think Olivia should go less of the safe route with her lead singles and go more of the hard hitting rock route seems to be the direction that she wants to pursue more anyways. She's Olivia Rodrigo. I mean she's a big enough artist to move the needle on what counts as a mainstream hit and I really think a song like My Way as the lead single for this album would have been such a great move. Yeah it was kind of a jump scare because I was listening to you plus me equals heart and I was like oh this is such a cute lovey dovey song and then I get to My Way and hear lyrics like here's the part where the girl gets pissed and I was gagged but it truly is such a great song to introduce both the anger and the sadness that we hear on the second half of the album. Conceptually this is Olivia's strongest album yet and I love how there's even moments where she references other tracks on the project cause it really makes it feel like a full story. I just hope that we see Olivia take more risks with her single choices and give songs like My Way and expectations the single treatment for this era.
