Another young life has been stolen by the cruel hand of assumption and mob justice. Vusimuzi “Vusi” Radebe was allegedly beaten to death on Saturday after members of a community stopped him, questioned him about where he lived and where he was coming from, and then turned that questioning into a fatal accusation. According to his family, Radebe was simply walking from his grandmother’s home in Kwaguqa toward Lynville. When confronted, he told those who stopped him that he lived in Kempton Park and had been visiting his grandmother. That single piece of information, spoken in a moment of vulnerability, became the spark that ended his life. The family says assumptions were immediately made about him because of the recent killings that have gripped Kempton Park. In the eyes of the people who stopped him, living in or being connected to Kempton Park was enough to mark him as a suspect. He was then allegedly brutally assaulted and died at the scene. “He was a human being, someone’s son, grandson and loved one. His life should never have ended because of an assumption,” the family said. These words cut to the heart of the tragedy. Vusi was not a faceless statistic. He was a young man with a family that loved him, a grandmother he had just visited, and a future that was violently cut short. The community’s fear, however understandable in the face of ongoing violence, cannot justify the destruction of an innocent life. When fear replaces evidence and rumour replaces due process, justice itself dies. This incident is a painful reminder of how quickly suspicion can turn into lethal action. South Africa continues to grapple with the scourge of mob justice, where communities take the law into their own hands instead of allowing the police and courts to do their work. Every time this happens, another family is left shattered, another community is left divided, and the rule of law is further eroded. The Radebe family is now appealing to anyone who may have witnessed the incident or seen Vusi travelling from Kwaguqa towards Lynville to come forward with information. Their call is simple and urgent: help bring the truth to light so that those responsible can be held accountable. No one should lose their life because of where they say they live. No one should be beaten to death on the basis of rumour or fear. Vusi Radebe’s death must not be allowed to fade into another forgotten tragedy. His name, his story, and the injustice done to him must be remembered and acted upon. We urge the public to share any information that can assist the investigation and to reject the dangerous culture of mob justice wherever it appears.
