In yet another devastating blow to the fight against gender-based violence, police have registered an inquest docket after the body of an unidentified woman was discovered in a dam at Moroka, Soweto. The body, wrapped in a duvet, was found on Sunday, 20 September 2026, at approximately 17:00. Authorities estimate the victim was in her twenties. This discovery adds to the growing list of women whose lives have been cut short, coming as the nation continues to grieve the women murdered in Ekurhuleni and across South Africa. Ward 33 Councillor in Rockville, Nompumelo Mazibuko, described the find as deeply shocking. She called on community members with any information that could assist the investigation to come forward without delay. “This is a painful reminder of the violence that continues to claim the lives of our sisters, daughters, and mothers,” Cllr Mazibuko said. “We cannot remain silent.” Moroka SAPS is leading the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the woman’s death. The deceased has been taken by the relevant authorities to the government mortuary for further examination and identification. This latest tragedy underscores the urgent need for stronger protection, faster justice, and collective action to end the killing of women. Too many families are left searching for answers. Too many communities are left mourning. Every unidentified body represents a life stolen and a family left in anguish.
