This morning in Pankop, Mpumalanga, family and friends gathered to bid a final farewell to Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo, the 38-year-old runner whose life was stolen far too soon. Among the mourners stood her eight-year-old daughter, Khumo, who delivered a tribute that left many in tears. Standing before the gathering, little Khumo spoke directly to her mother with a courage that belied her years. “Dearest mother, how heartbreaking that you left me,” she said. She spoke of the emptiness her mother’s absence has created, of the hugs she longs for, and of the love that remains. “I wish I could hug you. I wish you can be here. But I carry you inside my heart, so you can always be nearby.” Khumo closed her message with words that captured both profound loss and enduring love: “Your beautiful daughter loves you so much. She misses you every day, but I know that I have gained a beautiful angel in you.” She called herself her mother’s princess, holding on to the memories and the knowledge that Tsontso now watches over her. Tsontso disappeared after leaving her Kempton Park home for a routine afternoon run. It was Khumo who first raised the alarm when her mother failed to return. Her body was later identified, and today her community laid her to rest in the place where she was born and raised. As we honour Tsontso’s memory and stand with Khumo and the Moselakgomo family, we are reminded once more of the urgent need to end the violence that continues to claim the lives of women and mothers across our nation. No child should have to say goodbye like this. No woman should leave home for a run and never return. May Tsontso rest in peace. May little Khumo feel the love and protection of all who surround her.
