Five members of the March and March group were shot during a protest in Dunoon, Cape Town, on Friday, 17 October 2026. The incident took place at the intersection of Potsdam Road and The Stables Road at around 12:15. The victims are three women aged 40, 42 and 48, and two men aged 35 and 43. All five were taken to hospital. Table View police are investigating five counts of attempted murder and a case of public violence. At this stage the motive remains unclear, and the victims have said they could not identify the shooter or the direction from which the shots were fired. A Cape Town leader of the group has claimed the members were supporting an Imbizo Yamadoda march when extortionists appeared and opened fire. These details come from reports circulating on social media by a local journalist. No official police statement or major news outlet coverage has yet been widely published confirming the full circumstances. As more information emerges, it is important that the investigation proceeds without speculation or politicisation of the facts. Violence of this nature has no place in any community. Whether the shooting is linked to extortion, political tensions, or another motive, the priority must be a thorough and transparent investigation that identifies those responsible and holds them accountable. Families of the injured deserve clear answers. Residents of Dunoon, a community that has long struggled with high levels of crime and extortion, also deserve to know that the law will be applied equally and that no one can open fire on people in public without consequences. JustAdvocacy stands for justice that is not selective. We call on the South African Police Service to release official updates, protect witnesses, and pursue every lead. We urge community leaders and residents to remain calm, avoid retaliation, and allow the legal process to take its course. Calls for action against crime and illegal activity must never become an excuse for further bloodshed. At the same time, the right to peaceful protest must be protected, and those who use violence to silence others must face the full force of the law. This incident is a reminder that unresolved crime, extortion networks and social tensions in townships continue to put ordinary people at risk. South Africa cannot keep normalising gun violence in its streets. Every life matters, and every shooting must be treated with the seriousness it deserves. We will continue to follow developments and amplify calls for accountability.
