HOT TAKE!!! Work life balance, that's on you. Work life balance, that's on you. Only you can guard your peace. So SKIMS CEO Emma Grede stirred a little controversy when she said, 'work-life balance is your problem, not the employer's responsibility.' Fast Company published an article basically said, hey, you are a CEO and you market to women. How can you say that? First of all, her point of view on work-life balance and how her company marketing to women are two separate issues. Secondly, I kind of agree with her. Guys, it's not your company's job to provide work-life balance to you. That's on you. If your company gives you wellness days, flexible hours, or mental health support, fantastic. Use them and use them all. But what if they don't? You still have to find ways to take care of yourself. You set your boundaries. You speak up when timelines aren't realistic. You decide when to unplug. Even if that means resetting expectations or annoying your team members. By the way, I get it. There are consequences. You need to think about the consequences and you have choice. If your employer offers nothing, maybe there's something you can do. 1. Block time like a boss. Block time like a boss. Guard your calendar whether it's 30 minutes for a walk, picking up your kids, or just thinking time. If it's not on your calendar, it won't happen. Number two, redefine your yes. Every yes is a trade-off. Learn to say no or not now without guilt. You can't do it all. No one really expects you to. Maybe your boss does. Well, then you should have a conversation with them. But like I said, there are consequences. Understand the consequences and determine if you want to go for it or not. 3. Create your own recharge rituals. Create your own recharge rituals. I'm not talking about anything fancy. First of all, you can start your day tech free just for a couple minutes. Or you can schedule a midweek pack your own lunch with a friend or end your Friday with a walk instead of a Zoom. Remember, you own your career. You own your work and life balance. You have choice. You choose your choices and then accept the consequences. Alright, I know it sounds harsh. Comment below, share with me what you think.
