The way that Gen Z writes code is so fascinating. So I have a crack 20 year old CS intern from Waterloo right now and it's so interesting seeing the different ways he thinks about creating software. Like I feel like how pre-internet millennials watching 2000s babies swipe on iPads must have felt. I think the biggest difference that I can pinpoint is kind of just this fundamental difference in mindset of how granular of control that you need to have over your tools. Pre-AI, the mindset was like, I need to design every component of my stack, every file, every method, every interaction between different parts of the stack. And engineers took a lot of pride in keeping all that context in their heads and being able to recall any minute detail from memory when asked. With AI-native coding, it's a lot more fluid and malleable. It doesn't make sense to agonize over every architecture decision for four days and keep every single detail in your head anymore because one, you're not writing all the code yourself, so you can't possibly know every single detail. And two, the cost of changing the code is so cheap. A whole architecture refactor that would have taken a week before AI now takes hours. So the fundamental mindset shift is like letting go. Letting go and accepting that you're not going to be the IC that knows all the details, you're going to be the manager. And if you slide that mindset to its extreme, you get vibe coding. Like you basically know none of the details and also when you ask the AI question about the details, you don't understand the responses.
