6 Steps I Used to Build Real Wealth in My 20s
I'm first-gen. Nobody taught me this... I had to figure it out
1. I Bet On Myself
First-gen. No family money.
I worked my way into Big Tech, securing multiple offers from Google (3.5 years) and now at another FAANG company. That foundation gave me the stability to start building wealth.
2. Open a High-Yield Savings Account (HYSA)**
Don't let cash sit earning 0.01%. Shoot to get your first $5k-$10k into an account ASAP
These pay 4.5-5.25% APY:
•SoFi
•Ally
•Capital One 360
•Marcus by Goldman Sachs
Use this for your emergency fund (3-6 months of expenses).
3. Leverage Your Company 401(k), 403(b), etc.
•Contribute at least 10% pre-tax (plus your company match).
•If under 40, consider switching from a target-date fund -> S&P 500 or Growth fund.
Compound interest > market timing.
4. Build Your Roth IRA
•Max out your $7K/year (2025 limit)
•If you earn too much -> use the Backdoor Roth IRA.
•Invest in 1-2 ETFs: VTI, QQQM, SCHD.
Tax-free growth = wealth for your future self.
5. Start a Personal Brokerage
This is your freedom account. I use Robinhood for:
•Individual stocks
•Growth & small caps
•Crypto or ETFs
No contribution limits.
Higher risk, higher potential upside.
6. Play the Long Game
I'm earning multiple six figures with 5 active income streams, getting my MBA while working full-time ... because I'm building for the next decade, not the next flex.
Everyone's wealth journey is different, build smart habits, stay patient, and let compound interest work.
