I paid $325 for this card and it gives me back $424 in credits before I even count a single point. And I'm not spending anything extra to get it. Every dollar I was already spending is now working for me. Let me break it down. So the Amex Gold card is built for 2 things: food & travel. And if you eat out or buy groceries, this card basically pays for itself. Here is how the points work. You earn 4x points at restaurants worldwide. 4x on US supermarkets, up to $25,000 a year. And 3x on flights booked directly with airlines and 5x on prepaid hotels through Amex Travel. Every time I swipe at a restaurant or grocery store, I am earning 4 points per dollar. Those points transfer to airline & hotel partners worth around 1-2 cents each. On $2,000 a month in food and dining spend, that is roughly 96,000 points a year. From $960 to $1,900 in travel. The annual fee is $325. But Amex gives you $120 back in dining credits, $10 a month at places like Grubhub, Five Guys, The Cheesecake Factory. Plus additional resty and dining credits, the total annual credit value to $424. So this card is effectively free if you use the credits and everything on top is pure upside.
