I was talking to the vice dean of a medical school today

I was talking to the vice dean of a medical school today and she gave an advice that I think was so different than what I expected that I needed for a medical school application. I feel like as pre-meds, literally everyone asks us, what specialty do you wanna go in? And whenever you hear that question, it seems like you need to know the answer to. But she told me today, don't do that. She said her immediate thought process is, how do you even know that you wanna be, like, an optometrist before even entering medical school? So then my question was, if you don't have any, like, specialty that you are interested in, how do you back up the fact that you want to go into medicine? Like, how do you even, like, explain why you wanna go into medicine? What do you wanna do in medicine? And she said, it's more important that you express your interest in the profession, meaning serving with unconditional patience, unconditional care, unconditional love. And although I'm sure everyone's a little different, every school's a little different. This vice dean of this medical school was telling me that when they take students, they would want people to come in with fresh set of eyes instead of having a bias towards, like, what they wanna do, what they wanna specialise. And I just feel like that's so different than all the advice that I've kind of gotten prepared for medical schools saying like, you need to have a niche or like a certain, like a big idea, at least of what specialty you wanna go into. So yeah, I thought I might share that because I thought that was, like, really helpful. Um, and changed my perspective when I'm kind of, uh, thinking about medical school application.
