Most people think that Spinneys is a supermarket. And a while back they were trending. In Antelias. Spinneys. One of the smartest retail case studies in Lebanon. Behind it is GMRL, Gray Mackenzie Retail Lebanon. A retail group that also owns Happy, Monoprix, Grab'n Go, and NokNok. A retail ecosystem that covers different customers from all ages, all price points, all sides. Their strategy was clear. Position the brand as premium. An in-store experience better than anywhere else. Most supermarkets competed on convenience, but Spinneys competed on building a brand image in people's perception to become known as the high-end supermarket. And in retail, perception is valuable. Their perception of it, because this can affect how much they can price things. The smartest move came later. Spinneys realized that supermarkets were no longer functional spaces to buy groceries and leave. People wanted an experience. Everything started feeling curated instead of transactional. We all heard about Spinneys The Hub in Antelias. We started planning our weekends to go there. This branch specifically has different products, the Sephora of Beirut, like beauty products, skin care, hair care, etc. In the business world, we call this destination retail. The goal is no longer to make customers shop as quickly as possible. Efficiency is no longer important. The goal is to make them spend more time inside the space, because the longer they stay, the more they spend. But did anyone else notice this? In one of Lebanon's worst economic periods, we have a bunch of those, but the most recent one, Spinneys secured around 22 million dollars in financing support from EBRD and Europe. And that matters for one reason, because investors don't fund expansion in companies with no growth potential, especially in a country where you have so many issues. It seems they're here to stay. Today they have 18 branches in Lebanon. The 22 million dollars tells you everything you need to know. Their goal is to keep growing, to become digital first, and to have their own products, Spinneys branded. So what can we learn from Spinneys? Modern businesses don't just compete on products anymore. At this point, it's not relevant. The experience, the branding, and emotional connection matters more. Let me know in the comments who to discuss next time.
