How I saved $40,000 for my first home when I was only making $55,000 a year, but I managed to save $40,000 for my down payment, so I'm going to share with you exactly how I made that happen. The biggest thing I did was be very intentional with my paycheck. I knew exactly where all my money was going and I tracked it. I built a budgeting spreadsheet where I broke it down by category so I could see where most of my expenses were. And from there, I looked at each line and decided where I needed to cut down. I lowered my expenses as much as possible so I could make sure every extra dollar was going to my savings. The second thing I did was actually increase my income just slightly. I had a part-time job on the weekends, I worked 12-hour shifts two days in a row, and I also worked sometimes on holidays. And every single dollar that I made from my second job went straight into my high-yield savings account. You do not need to get a second income, but it helped me save a lot faster. I was able to save $20,000 over the course of nine months. And lastly, I learned how to stop glamorizing overspending. The hardest part wasn't saving the money, it was staying focused when it felt like everyone else was just spending and upgrading their lifestyle. And after months of being consistent, I looked at my bank account and I realized I had saved almost $40,000. Buying a house felt almost impossible when I started, but I managed to get there and so can you.
