Scanlan Theodore is a $100 million a year business and here is why.

Scanlan Theodore has been quietly building an Australian luxury fashion empire since 1987. The brand launched in 1987. The flagship store was on Chapel Street in South Yarra. It was started by two founders, but Fiona Scanlan actually sold out and then Gary Theodore continued to grow the business. Fiona left the business in 2003, leaving Gary as the sole owner and the design director. Their signature product and what they've actually made the most money from is their crepe knit. My mom had one of these and I think still has one of these and my sister and I used to steal it from her wardrobe all the time. It's made from an Italian sourced sustainable yarn, developed exclusively in Australia for the brand. It's stretchy, it's comfortable, it's also non-wrinkly and it's a reason why customers keep coming back. This designer brand has never really followed trends. They focus on core pieces that they repeat every season as well as integrating some fashion pieces that the customer can work back with their core. And all the Scanlan pieces, and if you're a customer you'll know this, work six years later. Everything my mom owns from Scanlan is incredible quality and something that I can wear in my wardrobe, that my sister can integrate easily into her wardrobe and then also my mom can keep in her wardrobe and all of us have completely different styles. As a brand, they've maintained quiet luxury so the people in the know recognize it. They're not loud, they're not pushing major paid advertising or billboards. It's always been basically word of mouth and this cult underground following. And then once they have you in, they nurture their customers. They have grown slowly over time and they recently surpassed 100 million in annual revenue. They have 28 stores globally. They also sell through David Jones boutiques and six of their own boutiques are actually in the US. Fans of the brand include Nicole Kidman and Meghan Markle and their retail store concept actually showcases artists so the retail stores are also galleries as well.
