Welcome back to another episode of dietitian freezer prep, a series where I show you how I stock my freezer with homemade staples that save time, money, and make healthy eating feel effortless. Today's freezer staple is Egyptian Hawashi. Think seasoned beef stuffed inside a pita and frozen flat, then baked straight from the freezer whenever you need a quick dinner. It's a super easy recipe I'll put in the caption. All you have to do is mix ground beef with finely chopped onion, bell pepper, and parsley, and season it well with all the spices together. Once it's mixed together evenly, you stuff the mixture into your pitas and press them flat. You can make them as thick or as thin as you prefer. In Egyptian culture, they make them a little bit thicker, so that's what I did here. One tip that makes a big difference is to use a thicker pita, not those thin ones. They hold up a lot better once you cook them and they'll be crisp instead of soggy. We don't want a soggy pita. You freeze them flat in freezer bags so they stack easily and are ready whenever you're ready to eat. Bake them straight from frozen, no thawing needed. Pop them in a preheated oven for about 45 minutes, flipping them halfway through. And as always, use a meat thermometer to make sure your beef reaches a safe internal temperature. I served mine with simple salads, yogurt, dill sauce, fries on the side, but you can pair them with whatever is on hand, like rice, whatever is a meal. This is exactly the kind of meal that makes the healthy choice the easy choice instead of wondering what's for ordering takeout. I already have a balanced, high-protein meal waiting in my freezer.
