I recently saw a stat that over 80% of feedback that women receive is about their personality and not their skills at work. So here are five things I have been told over the years under the guise of that feedback that I wholeheartedly reject. As a 29-year-old ambitious career girl and hiring expert. One, my personality belied my intelligence. This is my favorite one to talk about so when you're 22 years old. It was quite good feedback and I have a separate video on why, but I really feel quite strongly that this is not something that a man would ever hear in a professional environment. Two, when I cried once at work and I was told that my mental health would be the biggest blocker in my career. Literally needs no explanation, especially because it was in an environment where I was working such crazy hours, I was barely sleeping. One time I cracked at the office, which looking back was totally understandable, it was weaponized against me. Three, that when I say nice things to people, I'm inauthentic. I'm actually a very direct person. I've worked hard to soften my feedback when I give it as a manager and ensure I'm actually listening to their stresses in the workplace. After a few years of managing people, my boss took it upon themselves to tell me that everyone thought I was inauthentic because I was saying things like, well done, good job. Actually stung and it took me a long time to recover. Four, that written expression is it's true. I try really hard to make sure I don't do this on calls or in meetings, but sometimes it's inevitable. I'm hard pressed to think of an example where this has been said to a man. I didn't find it that offensive, but comment below if you agree or disagree. It feels quite gendered to me. When answering back, I had pretty very myself. Thanks mum, with very, I was also in my mid-20s when this happened and it felt like a put down to me. Not fairly back yourself. You can do it constructively. And if someone calls you moody, gobby, difficult, all of the above, it's because they feel threatened, obviously. There is a certain way to conduct yourself in the workplace. But I also think so hold different just about real about today. If this resonates, I'm career me building big careers.
