Perplexity AI
Why it worked
The video effectively uses a compelling narrative of overcoming adversity and disrupting a tech giant (Google) to explain the value proposition of Perplexity. The story of the founder's journey, combined with the clear demonstration of Perplexity's superior functionality (direct answers with citations vs. endless links), makes it highly engaging and shareable.
Summary
This video tells the story of Aravind Srinivas, the founder of Perplexity AI, an AI-powered search engine that has achieved a $20 billion valuation. It highlights his journey from India to Berkeley and OpenAI, the challenges he faced with his first company, and how the frustration with Google's ad-heavy search results inspired him to create Perplexity, which provides direct, cited answers.

Original caption
This guy hated Google, so he built his own $20 billion app! Aravind Srinivas grows up in India obsessed with computers, earns a PhD at Berkeley, and spends years at OpenAI. In 2022 his first company dies in weeks when Twitter shuts down its free API, so he starts over. When his first employee asks about health insurance, Aravind has no idea what a deductible is. He Googles it and gets nothing but ads, so they wire up a chatbot to answer HR questions, and it responds with total confidence while being completely wrong. That's when it clicks. Both Aravind and co-founder Denis are PhDs, and in academia a claim without a source is just an opinion. So instead of confident guesses, they rebuild it to pull every answer from the real web and cite every sentence. ✓ Reads the web for you and writes one direct answer instead of millions of results ✓ Backs every sentence with a cited source ✓ Runs on top of every major model while Google and OpenAI burn billions building their own ✓ Grows to 100 million users on word of mouth Google gives him ads, not answers → a chatbot that's confidently wrong → PhDs who demand a source for everything → rebuilds it to cite every sentence → one answer, not a million links → 100 million users and a $20 billion company. Sometimes the fix is bringing one rule from your old world into an industry that forgot it. #Business #Perplexity #AI #Success #Entrepreneur @Perplexity: Ask Anything.
