This woman turned a $6,000 loan into a $1 billion pretzel empire! Anne Beiler grows up in an Amish family in Pennsylvania, marries at 19, and dreams only of being a mom. Then her 19-month-old daughter is killed in a farm accident. Overwhelmed by grief, she turns to her pastor for help, and he abuses her for seven years. When she finally tells her husband Jonas the truth, he doesn't leave, and instead Jonas decides to become a marriage counselor offering free therapy to families in their community. In 1987, Anne takes a $200 a week job rolling pretzels at a Maryland farmer's market. Seven months later, she borrows $6,000 from Jonas' father and opens her own stand. The first pretzels are terrible. A supplier sends the wrong ingredients and Anne and Jonas are forced to experiment. So they tweak the recipe. The next customer takes a bite, looks up, and says, "This is amazing." By 1989, the first franchise is open. And by 1992, they have over 100 stores. What started as a pretzel stand is now the world's largest pretzel franchise. Today Auntie Anne's has over 2,000 locations in 25 countries and nearly $1 billion in annual sales.
