Apparently we need Tariffs 101 again. Trump isn’t wrong that Canada has imposed tariffs and other trade barriers affecting some American agricultural products. It has. But saying Canada “charged our farmers” makes it sound as though Canadian customs officials showed up at Farmer Bob’s barn with an invoice. That’s not how this works. Tariffs are taxes on imports, generally paid to the government imposing them by the importer of record. Which is why the same lesson matters when Trump announces tariffs on Canadian products: Canada doesn’t simply write America a check. U.S. importers face the tariff when those goods enter the United States, and some or all of that additional cost can ultimately work its way through businesses and consumers.
