JD Vance has repeatedly connected his mother’s addiction story to drugs crossing the southern border. But there’s an important piece of that history that gets lost when the story becomes a political talking point. His mother, Beverly Aikins, has publicly described stealing morphine while working at a hospital and selling drugs during her addiction. That doesn’t diminish what addiction did to Vance’s family—or his mother’s achievement in recovery. It does raise a legitimate question about how politicians frame deeply complicated American problems when immigration becomes the convenient explanation. In his actual 2022 campaign ad, Vance asked, “Do you hate Mexicans?” before discussing border security and saying he nearly lost his mother to “the poison coming across our border.” Those words matter. So does the history. Because America’s opioid epidemic wasn’t created by one nationality, one border or one administration.
