I need everyone to appreciate the sheer governmental horsepower being deployed here. The President of the United States signed an executive order today directing the Department of the Interior, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names and federal agencies to replace “Lake Ontario” with “Lake America” in federal government usage. And Interior Secretary Doug Burgum is apparently proudly “on it.” Excellent. One tiny geographical complication: Canada is still there. Lake Ontario literally straddles the international border. About 52% of its surface area is Canadian. And Trump’s executive order has precisely zero authority to require Canada—or international organizations—to call it Lake America. Prime Minister Mark Carney has already essentially responded: Nope. It’s Lake Ontario. The name has existed for more than 400 years and predates both modern Canada and the United States. So after all the ceremony, executive orders, federal directives and flag emojis, we’ve accomplished something extraordinary: The United States government will have different words on its maps. Meanwhile Canada will continue calling Lake Ontario… Lake Ontario. Government efficiency is apparently spending federal resources renaming something the other country sharing it refuses to rename.
