JD Vance managed to talk about the importance of national unity on the 25th anniversary of September 11—and then, practically in the same breath, use the occasion to take a sarcastic swipe at Joe Biden. Vance said he was looking forward to seeing Biden at the Ground Zero commemoration and joked that they would have “many, many intense intellectual conversations.” Come on. This isn’t a campaign rally. It isn’t a roast. It isn’t the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. It is the 25th anniversary of September 11. A day commemorating nearly 3,000 people who were killed. A day when families return to Ground Zero and hear the names of their loved ones read aloud. A day that Vance himself had just finished saying should remind Americans of our shared sense of purpose. You don’t have to like Joe Biden. You don’t have to agree with him politically. But a Vice President representing the United States at Ground Zero should be capable of setting partisan snark aside long enough to understand the gravity of the occasion.
