Your payslip is your responsibility, not your employer's. Here are the three things that I want you to check on your payslip today. I'm a teacher who's obsessed with finance and I'm now on track to become a millionaire on a 36 grand salary. I wouldn't even be able to consider doing that if I didn't understand my payslip. First, check your tax code. It should be 1257L, that stands for the £12,570 pounds tax-free allowance that you get. If it's not that, please call HMRC and find out why, because that could mean you're overpaying or underpaying on tax. Secondly, check your student loan deductions. If you're a teacher, I'm guessing that you went to uni. There's a plan one, plan two and plan five, which all repay at different thresholds. You'd be surprised how often they get this wrong. Please check it. Thirdly, check your pension contributions. If you're a teacher, you're most likely paying into a teacher pension scheme. Depending on your salary, you'll currently be paying between 7.4 and 12% of that salary. Check that what's being deducted matches what you're supposed to be paying. Bonus # - check you are not opted out. If it does say opted out and you don't remember doing it, investigate that immediately. By the way, I'm Elly, I'm a teacher on track to be a millionaire. And if you're looking for all things finance, give us a follow.
