The woman in the Callaway golf ad who was depicted as being shoved to the ground and scolded by her boyfriend for touching his driver on a tee box was never supposed to have a face in the first place. If you go back and watch that God awful commercial, you will notice that the woman is never identified. Her face is never seen, and all of the accountability that would come with shoving a woman to the ground and scolding her in front of countless others, embarrassing by the way, violated, and embarrassed, but she doesn't have a face and I'm sure that was intentional. Callaway wants to act like they didn't know what they were doing. It was a harmless joke, they didn't try. But by intentionally leaving out the woman's face, they intentionally left out an obvious way for people to actually notice what kind of harm was being done. If we got to see this woman's face, from her perspective, it would have looked like a horror film. The woman in the advertisement wasn't even given her full humanity. And that was an intentional decision because if she had her full humanity, if she had the ability to react, to say, don't shove me, don't push me to the ground, don't scold me in front of our friends, don't humiliate me, if she had the ability to do that, it would have painted a very different picture of the man who shoved her to the ground from his perspective, without her face, without her personhood, without her ability to react, without her ability to respond, the person who needed to be held accountable in the commercial was never held accountable. And I feel like this is such an ironic and satirical twist because by her not having a face, she could theoretically be any woman. And in a way, she's every woman. A lot of times in media when someone's trying to paint a bigger picture, they will oftentimes obscure the identity of a person who's going through a very universal experience. I don't have any, like, examples off the top of my head, but I'm sure people smarter than me and more familiar with this can actually give you examples in the comments if needed. But by her not having an identity, she could be any woman. She is every woman. And as a college golfer and a golfer for most of my life, if not all of my life, I can tell you with complete certainty that aggression from men to women thrives in spaces where men are treated as the norm and women are treated as burdens, just for existing there. It's disgusting. It's horrific. The Callaway golf ad was sick. And her not having a face is extremely indicative of how actual women feel on golf courses every day. How partners of men who are sick, disgusting, disturbed man children who can't tolerate their things being touched by their partners. I have to go through life. And I have to tell you with complete certainty that aggression from men to women thrives in spaces where men are treated as the norm and women are treated as burdens, just for existing there.
