Because "freedom of the press" doesn't mean:

I keep coming back to this. Not because I necessarily need a White House reporter to look at the President of the United States on live television and say: “Go fuck yourself.” Although, admittedly, I would need popcorn. I keep coming back to it because why the hell should it ever get to that point? These reporters are adults. They’re professionals. They’re at work. And their job is not to make the president comfortable. Their job is to ask him questions. Hard ones. Annoying ones. Questions he doesn’t like. Questions he’s already answered. Questions he doesn’t want to answer. That’s quite literally why the press is there. And yet somehow we’ve reached this bizarre place where a president can call journalists stupid, obnoxious, nasty, dishonest—or personally insult them—and everyone just sort of… moves on to the next question. That isn’t normal presidential behavior simply because we’ve watched it happen enough times to become accustomed to it. And here’s the part that matters much more than whether somebody finally tells him to fuck off: The press does not work for the president. It doesn’t exist to flatter him. It doesn’t exist to protect him from uncomfortable questions. And it sure as hell doesn’t need to earn his permission to scrutinize the government. A free press is supposed to make powerful people uncomfortable. That’s the feature. Not the bug. So maybe the next time a reporter gets personally insulted for asking a perfectly legitimate question, somebody doesn’t politely absorb it and move along. They don’t need profanity. They don’t need theatrics. Just: “Mr. President, I’m doing my job. Please answer the question.” Then ask it again. And again. And again. Because presidents come and go.
