I knew the second Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the federal government to call Lake Ontario “Lake America” that the internet was going to become absolutely unusable. And here we are. 😂 Yes, the rename is real. Trump signed the order on August 27, and U.S. federal geographic records now use “Lake America.” But there is one rather important geographical inconvenience: Lake Ontario is shared with Canada, and the executive order cannot dictate what Canada or the rest of the world calls it. Canada has essentially responded with: That’s adorable. It’s Lake Ontario. Google Maps has already begun showing “Lake America” to U.S. users while Canadian users continue seeing Lake Ontario—meaning apparently we have reached the point where even geography now comes with regional political settings. 😭 And naturally, the memes have arrived. Lake Ontario vs. Lake America. I have no notes. Well… maybe one: You can issue an executive order.
