But the reason the joke lands? The Musk family’s own immigration history is considerably more complicated than the rhetoric suggests. Elon and Kimbal Musk were born in South Africa and later immigrated to North America. And according to reporting based on former business associates, court records and company documents, Elon worked on the startup Zip2 in the United States during a period when he allegedly did not have authorization to work here. Kimbal Musk has been even more explicit about their early Silicon Valley years, saying in a 2013 interview: “We were illegal immigrants.” Elon has disputed the characterization and maintains that he was legally permitted to work.
