If you’re planning to shop in Europe, you could leave hundreds of dollars on the table if you don't know how the VAT refund works. So what is the VAT? The VAT is the tax that's already included in the products you purchase in Europe. So in the US, you have a price, then you go to the register and then they add your taxes. The amount you see on the label already includes any taxes or fees. That is your VAT. So every country has a different VAT percentage, very similar to here in the states, how every state could have a different tax percentage for sales tax. So it's not the same percentage across the board. For example, let's say a country has a 22% VAT, that doesn't mean you're gonna get 22% back. There's other charges in there, and also the refund companies take their cut. From my experience, I've always received back anywhere from 10 to 16%, depending on the country and the retailer. You have to ask. You have to ask for the VAT tax-free paperwork when you buy. A lot of people think that this is something you do at the airport. That is absolutely false. This is something that starts at the store when you check out. Tell them that you're not an EU resident and you would like your VAT refund, and they should be able to provide you with the paperwork. They'll check your passport information, all that good stuff, and then you'll get a form from the retailer. The airport part is where people get confused. All you're doing at the airport is validating your VAT refund. You could either do this at a kiosk or in person with an actual physical stamp. Essentially, that paperwork that you got at the store, you bring it with you to the airport, you get it stamped and validated, then you upload it to some kind of app depending on the provider, and the refund will start processing when you head to the airport. Keep the stuff you're claiming accessible. Make sure you keep the stuff that you buy accessible. They could ask to see it. And if you're visiting multiple EU countries, you need to do your VAT validation at your EU exit point. So not necessarily the country that you actually make your purchase. Keep all your receipts and paperwork until you get the refund. Each of these countries have a different VAT percentage, each of these countries have a different VAT threshold, each of these countries use a different VAT provider, and there's different rules around all of this depending on the country. Part 2 and Part 3 will be up on my page. I've also had a lot of mistakes that I've done in the past that have cost me my refund, so I could also go into that. But just high level, these are the things that you really should be doing if you're going to Europe and you're planning to shop. If you like this video, make sure you like and save.
