The search for 11-year-old Athi Zimi Mnguni has ended in unimaginable heartbreak. On Thursday, local residents hunting in the forest discovered her decomposed body in a river in Nomcamba Locality, Zinduneni administrative area, Ngqeleni, Eastern Cape. Almost four weeks after she vanished, the little girl who left home to play was found still wearing the same clothes she had on the day she disappeared. Athi went missing on 30 August while playing on a nearby sports field with two younger children, aged six and nine. When her family could not find her, she was reported missing at Ngqeleni police station the following day. At the time of her disappearance she was wearing blue denim shorts, a maroon T-shirt, a blue tracksuit top and a grey hat. Police from the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences unit in Mthatha, working with Ngqeleni officers, the K9 unit and later the mounted unit, conducted extensive searches. Officers and community members went door to door through surrounding villages. By 4 September the search had yielded nothing. Captain Isaac Nomanjila of the investigating team appealed for information and urged the public to contact him or Crime Stop on 08600-10111. Police spokeswoman Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa confirmed that the body was identified by Athi’s family and community members. The discovery brings a devastating close to weeks of hope, fear and desperate searching. This tragedy is a painful reminder of how vulnerable our children remain, even in familiar spaces close to home. A sports field where children should feel safe became the last place Athi was seen alive. Her death demands more than sorrow. It demands answers, accountability and a renewed commitment to protecting every child. JustAdvocacy stands with Athi’s family and the Ngqeleni community in their grief. We call for a thorough, transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding her disappearance and death. No child should vanish while playing. No family should endure weeks of uncertainty only to face such a cruel confirmation. We urge authorities to leave no stone unturned. We urge communities to remain vigilant and to look out for one another’s children. And we urge every person with any information, no matter how small it may seem, to come forward. Silence only deepens the wound. Athi Zimi Mnguni was a child. She deserved safety, protection and a future. May her memory strengthen the fight for justice and for the safety of every child in South Africa. #JustAdvocacy #JusticeForAthi #ProtectOurChildren #ChildSafety #EasternCape
