In the quiet township of Mamelodi West, a mother’s worst nightmare unfolded on Friday afternoon. Merriam Makgopa Makena returned home from work only to find blood on the kitchen floor. Following the trail into a bedroom, she discovered the lifeless bodies of her 14-year-old twin sons, Bonolo and Bohlale Makena. Both boys had been stabbed multiple times. One of them was covered with a blanket. The horror of that discovery continues to devastate the family. Speaking to eNCA, the boys’ aunt, Kagiso Mogale, painted a picture of a household left shattered and searching for answers. “It’s heartbreaking. We’re all devastated. She’s not doing well. She’s always crying. We are all shocked,” Mogale said of the twins’ mother. “Why would someone come in? And then we don’t understand what really happened.” Crucially, Mogale and the family reject the idea that this was a robbery gone wrong. Only the boys’ phones and a PS4 console were taken. Nothing else of value was missing from the house. There was no forced entry. “We believe that this is not robbery, because there was no forced entry,” she explained. Neighbours arrived to help the distraught mother, who could barely speak when she called for family support. These details raise deeply troubling questions. How did the perpetrator or perpetrators gain access to the home? Were the boys targeted? Was the attacker someone known to the family? Police have confirmed they are investigating a double murder and are following leads, but at the time of reporting no arrests had been made and the motive remains unclear. Forensic teams examined the scene, yet the community is left with fear and unanswered questions. This brutal killing of two young boys in the supposed safety of their own bedroom strikes at the heart of every parent’s worst fear. Children should be able to return from school, lock the gate as instructed, and wait safely for their mother to come home. Instead, these twins were cut down in a manner that speaks of calculated violence rather than opportunistic crime. JustAdvocacy stands with the Makena family in demanding swift, thorough justice. We call on the South African Police Service to leave no stone unturned. We urge anyone in Mamelodi West or surrounding areas who saw or heard anything unusual on that day to come forward with information. Silence only protects the guilty. The loss of Bonolo and Bohlale is not just a family tragedy, it is a community wound. These boys had their whole lives ahead of them. Their mother, their aunt, and every relative now face a future emptied of two bright young lives. We cannot allow such violence against children to become normalised. The family deserves answers. The community deserves safety. South Africa’s children deserve to grow up without the constant shadow of violence. We will continue to amplify the Makena family’s call for truth and accountability until those responsible are found and held to account. #JustAdvocacy #JusticeForMamelodiTwins #ProtectOurChildren #MamelodiWest #EndViolenceAgainstChildren
